Statewide Bird Education Programs conducted in Tamil Nadu—2017

Ganeshwar SV

Recently, I was digging into my old files and to my surprise I found the detailed report of the Statewide Bird Education Programs that I organized in 2017 under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). These training workshops were conducted for teachers by the Department of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu; we were given a slot to present the importance of birds in the ecosystem and the need to take birding to children.

SARVA SHIKSHA ABHIYAN – EDUCATION FOR ALL MOVEMENT

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) – Education for All Movement is an Indian Government programme aimed at the universalisation of elementary education. SSA has become a huge success in providing quality basic education to the children in Tamil Nadu due to the consistent and tremendous efforts being taken by the Department of School Education, Govt. of Tamil Nadu.

STATE-LEVEL WORKSHOPS

I got an opportunity to give a presentation in the State-level SSA Training Workshop held at Chennai. After my interaction with the teachers, the wonder and services of birds had impressed them! Soon after my session was over, Tmt. K. Sridevi, Joint Director, SSA took me immediately to the Secretariat to meet the then Secretary for School Education, Thiru. T. Udhayachandran I.A.S.

MEETING WITH THE SECRETARY OF SCHOOL EDUCATION

We waited for a while and were called in. I was a bit nervous but he made sure that I was comfortable during the discussion. He is simple, soft spoken with a determined voice, a voracious reader and a man of great knowledge. Thiru. T. Udhayachandran I.A.S. was just straight to the point and was ready to support this outreach program about birds. Interestingly, he too had a set of ideas related to birds and environment which he wanted to implement in schools. He also said that environmental organizations in Tamil Nadu must have the readiness to work together when there is a need to achieve bigger goals. The only question he asked was if we had the capacity (number of resource persons) to reach all the districts to conduct awareness programs for teachers. He was also clear about having resource persons who can do well with awareness sessions so that our best of intentions could be fulfilled. I didn’t have any direct answer but keeping in mind the resources of Tamil Nadu Science Forum spread across all districts, I agreed that we could do it. Then he told me that similar workshops would be conducted for teachers at the district level and then at block levels and insisted me to coordinate bird educators across Tamil Nadu and all necessary support would be provided. After that I got the opportunity to meet him few more times for other key discussions about birds. He is also the man who brought several educational reforms in Tamil Nadu during his tenure as the Secretary of School Education.

DISTRICT-LEVEL WORKSHOPS

I started to contact as many birders as possible across Tamil Nadu. They readily agreed to such an exceptional opportunity and wanted to contribute towards it. SSA District level Training Workshop for Block Resource Teachers (BRTs) and Block Resource Coordinators (BRCs) was held in 30 districts across Tamil Nadu from 12th to 16th of June 2017. In 4 days, 9 bird educators covered 16 districts and reached out to 1951 teachers and spoke about the importance of birds and bird watching.

Before the start of district-level workshops, Saantha Kumar, a BRT from Pudhupalayam, Tiruvannamalai called me and requested to help him to conduct the program in his place. He told that he participated in the State-level workshop and then he too wanted to do his bit in spreading the importance of birds. A participant from the previous meet was ready to become an educator in the next! I was happy and made sure I sent him all the available materials and cleared his doubts over phone.

BLOCK-LEVEL WORKSHOPS

The district-level workshops were conducted in one place of the district, so we were able to make it without any hassle. Block-level SSA Workshops were a different ball game altogether. It was conducted in different locations within the districts over 5 days in two batches from 10 to 14 and 24 to 28 of July 2017 with one week interval between the two. It was a first time for me coordinating across the entire State and it was quite challenging to work on such a large scale. However, with the support and encouragement from teachers and educators, I think we all succeeded.

But the question was, once again if we concentrated on ticking the number of districts, then we would have to give up and miss several blocks within our districts. So, it was decided that we will do our best and try to cover maximum blocks of our respective localities instead of covering many districts and leaving it incomplete. Though we were doing our best, in some districts we couldn’t complete all blocks due to various reasons. Regardless of reasons and other minor issues, our efforts were a massive success! All teachers showed great interest and mentioned that they will teach their students on birds and birding! This was the overall collective result or feedback which we received and there are several teachers from the workshops who continue to bird and do their bit for birds even today!

BECOME A BIRD EDUCATOR

Back in 2017, we hardly had enough educators to touch all districts of Tamil Nadu or maybe I should say I didn’t know everybody. We had birders who showed interest for such outreach works but we couldn’t get them to step on the stage due to their hesitation of not doing a program previously. Simply encouraging those on phone calls may not click everytime. Others were willing to go without any experience but their profession, time and daily routine were too tight for them to make space for these kinds of voluntary efforts. We need to continue to put in more efforts so such issues are duly addressed.

Things have changed a lot over the two years but we have really a long way to go. I think the current birders (beginners and veterans) really want to see more and more new people to immerse in the joy of birding. If it has to happen, existing educators will have to continuously equip themselves in new ways while other birders have to evolve as educators. Enrolling yourself in programs such as ‘How to be a Birding Buddy?’ by Early Bird—NCF can help you learn various methods and strategies of taking birds to children and others. It is designed for people who would love to contribute in bird education and outreach especially with school children and teachers. buddy

Maybe the next time when such opportunity comes our way, we might be able to cover all districts with the help of resident birders itself. I derive such grit and inspiration from the fact that each and every day birders across India are taking efforts to spread this blissful hobby. Even just to think of it happening somewhere as I am writing this puts a big smile in heart and motivates me greatly. We must continue to do it in the dream and hope of nurturing at least one responsible birder or nature enthusiast in every home across the globe!

Resource materials used in these workshops are available in Bird Count India as well as Early Bird educational sites.

(Brown Wood Owl)!

BWO by Venkatraman
BROWN WOOD OWL (Strix leptogrammica)

Endemic Birds in Salem –

Endemic birds are those whose distribution is restricted to a defined area. In total, there are 70 South Asian endemic bird species recorded in Salem including the 16 Indian endemics. As birders explore more, many species might get added to this list. Clicking the scientific name of a species will lead to eBird data which shows photos, audio, distribution map, etc. of that particular bird.

Every year ENDEMIC BIRD DAY is celebrated in India to document the resident and endemic bird species. It falls on the same date as the Global Big Day. Here’s the complete list of species endemic (or near-endemic) to South Asia taken from Bird Count India.

காணும் புதிய பறவைகளின் பெயர்களைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க களவழிகாட்டிகளான (Field guide) ரிச்சர்ட் கிரிம்மெட், கரோல் & டிம் இன்ஸ்கிப் எழுதிய ‘Birds of the Indian Subcontinent (2nd edition)’ என்ற புத்தகத்தையோ தமிழில் ப.

BBT 1

PBC 2019: Team Palm Swift covers 2,085 KM in just three days

Dr. Arulvelan Thillainayagam, Financial Consultant & Birder, Coimbatore.

First time in my life Pongal Day was celebrated away from home and family members. Nevertheless, I looked forward to spend the festive days with birds and my young and hungry birding friends. What more a birder needs! The long wait got over; innate excitement neutralized the external chill weather.

DAY 1: January 14, 2019, Tuesday 05.30 AM

Myself, Selvaganesh K and Hareesha AS started the much anticipated Pongal Birding journey in all earnest. Off we went to the Nilgiris through Mettupalayam-Kotagiri Road. Mellifluous song of Malabar Whistling Thrush Myophonus horsfieldii greeted us just a few minutes close to Kunjappanai village, the eastern entry point of Nilgiris district. We made our first stop and immediately there was a Blue-capped Rock Thrush Monticola cinclorhynchus nearby, our first sighting for the festive trip. We spent 15 minutes for our first complete eBird checklist by walking through the Kunjappanai Reserve Forest patch adjacent to the road and logged in another 11 bird species. Sunrise in the hill country! Then we climbed down and made a stop over at Annur Lake for the Coimbatore district. Bird activity ascended as time passed. Highlight at that place was the entry of Red Avadavat Amandava amandava pretty close to the lake side road. We made it a point to have our complete lists away from towns to enable us to combine birding with food/drinks/health breaks.

At Genguvarpatti near Kodaikanal Ghat road junction we stopped for a complete list to cover Theni District. A lake full of birds on one side, paddyfields teeming with birds again on the other side and with Kodaikanal hills behind us, we quenched our thirst with tender coconuts. Nature at its Best! Day progressed with birding through Tirupur, Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Thoothukkudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari districts to culminate at lands end of India at Kanyakumari sunset point for the glorious sunset view. Simultaneously, we sighted Western Reef Egret Egretta gularis on the sea rock front and Yellow-wattled Lapwing in a patch close to the beach among other birds. Photogenic and beautiful looking Black-winged Kite Elanus caeruleus happened to be a regular sight all through the highways perched on electricity posts and lines especially in Madurai, Virudhunagar, Thoothukkudi and Tirunelveli districts.

Day 1 Summary – 163 checklists, 116 Species, 12 Districts, 16 Hours and 695 KMs. Night halt at Tirunelveli.

DAY 2: January 15, 2019, Wednesday 06.00 AM

Pongal Day dawned with attractive bird activity including Knob-billed Duck Sarkidiornis melanotos, Red-naped Ibis Pseudibis papillosa among others on the outskirts of Tirunelveli town itself when we did stationary birding while at a fueling point. It was a rare sight to observe the Red-naped Ibis in courtship mode. A place near Kayathar Veerapandiya Kattabomman Memorial was alive early in the morning with bird life when we stopped for a list for Thoothukkudi district. At Abiramam Kanmai in Ramanathapuram district we were attracted by the vastness of the huge tank and stopped to bird, but alas there was no water at all, as far as we could see. Bird activity was also limited. Right across the Vaigai River near Manamadurai we observed hectic bird activity especially a big group of white egrets, Red-wattled Lapwing Vanellus indicus and Bee-eaters. At Viralimalai bypass we observed a lot of Little Swifts Apus affinis and a good number of raptors when it was nearing noon. Near Samayapuram, a big group of Asian Openbills Anastomus oscitans and other stork sp. were riding the thermals.

In Thanjavur district, we travelled along the Cauvery River and near Nellichery, a local cycle rally on the road made us to take a respite for a while. We used the opportunity to spend quality time with ace birder Raja Simma Pandiyan, an IT Professional turned Agriculturist in the region. He came all the way to motivate and appreciate our effort. Highlight of the day was the presence of Common Pochard Aythya ferina, Garganey Spatula querquedula, Eurasian Wigeon Mareca penelope, Lesser Whistling Duck Dendrocygna javanica, Northern Pintail Anas acuta, Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata and Knob-billed Duck Sarkidiornis melanotos all in Varanavasi Lake near Ammakulam of Ariyalur district. Pongal Day at its best! We birded all day long through Tirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Madurai, Pudukottoai, Trichy, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karaikal, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts.

Day 2 Summary – 116 checklists, 115 Species, 15 Districts, 17 Hours and 690 KM. We halted for the night at Puducherry and our birder friend Surendhar Boobalan hosted us with great warmth.

DAY 3: January 16, 2019, Thursday 06.00 AM

It was a cold, misty and overcast sky at Puducherry. However, birding began very promisingly with a pair of Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus perched on a cell phone tower close to Pondicherry  University. Though misty weather continued up to Chennai outskirts on the East Coast highway, birding was bright with Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus, Brown-headed Gull Chroicocephalus brunnicephalus, Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica, Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia, Asian Openbill Anastomus oscitans and Spot-billed Pelican Pelecanus philippensis among others at Vennangupattu Bridge of Villupuram District. Thousands of Northern Pintail Anas acuta, hundreds of Eurasian Wigeon Mareca penelope, Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus, Little Stint Calidris minuta, Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia were a sight to behold at Mudhaliyarkuppam Backwaters/Odiyur Lake in Kanchipuram district. Please see the complete checklist here.

At Chennai, we were able to manage an open air birding cum breakfast at Adyar Ananda Bhavan and saw a Large-billed Crow Corvus marcrorhynchos relishing a Pappad feast. Tiruvallur district, as expected was crowded and teeming with vehicles and shops. We were able to locate a small tank with water amidst dense human habitation in Poonamalle. We were trying to find an entry point for the water body when two enthusiastic local school boys offered help and led us right through a house to gain access. We could see a staggering 23 Species in that tiny water body including Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica, Cormorants, Little Egrets Egretta garzetta and Brahminy Starling Sturnia pagodarum. It was unbelievable for us! Looks like birds have also learned to adapt to the polluted and cramped surroundings. Teacher ghosts in all the three of us rose up to motivate the school students into promising birders. On such occasions real teacher Selvaganesh has no match and finished a run away winner. Boys decided to give a slip, though.

From Chennai, we proceeded on the western corridor of Tamil Nadu with intermittent halts at every district for complete eBirding checklists apart from continuous travel and incidental checklists throughout the day. Near Kaveripakkam in Vellore district we enjoyed a birding lunch at Murugan Idli Shop. We were served with hot and sweet Pongal though we did not ask for it. Pongal and Birding together, literally. Just after crossing Krishnagiri, we had to make a stop to give the road to local Jallikkattu Bulls whose day it was, the well known Maattu Pongal Day. Poor bulls ran helter skelter on and off the road driving the people also to run. We used the occasion to do birding in the lake adjacent to the road.

We were forced stop again to give way to the Chief Minister’s convoy near Salem-Magudanchavadi toll. Surprisingly and by genuine coincidence a group of four Asian Palm Swifts Cypsiurus balasiensis happened to be the last of the bird species sighted for the day and for the trip to align perfectly with our team name, Palm Swift. However, we heard the call of Yellow-wattled Lapwing while looking/listening for a 15 minute nocturnal stationary checklist in Erode district to mark our 32nd district in Tamil Nadu during this Pongal Birding Festival. Birding for the day started from Puducherry and progressed through Villupuram, Kanchipuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal and Erode districts.

Day 3 Summary – 160 Checklists, 96 Species, 12 Districts, 15 Hours and 700 KM. Back to Coimbatore and Home.

Pongal Bird Trip: 3 days Summary – 439 eBird Checklists, 151 Species, 34 Districts (TN 32 and Puducherry 2), 48 Hours and 2085 KM.

The last day (January 17, 2019) was spent with our family and with the local neighborhood birds. On the whole, it was a thoroughly enjoyable, exhilarating and experiential learning run of birding for three days. None of us wanted to stop this journey but only wished to continue to bird forever. Not a minute passed, without a bird on view to at least one of us. There are many districts in Tamil Nadu which are in the forefront of birding like Coimbatore, Tirupur, Chennai, Salem, Kanchipuram with numerous active birders. Simultaneously there are many other districts like Karur, Perambalur, Dharmapuri, Sivaganga and Namakkal wherein birding activity is very limited. We wanted to motivate the birders in those districts and other active birders in the nearby districts to take a cue from our pilot effort and support birding activity in deficient districts. Time to recall and thank Dr P Jeganathan, Scientist, Nature Conservation Foundation who floated this idea of covering all TN Districts for Pongal Bird Count and for his continuous support throughout the trip.

For the umpteenth time I realized that the world is big, nature is all around, birds are everywhere, we are too small and that we need to explore for ever. This Pongal Birding Festival was yet another opportunity to do that.

Do see their amazing animated journey in this video prepared by Rajarajan. For detailed report and results of Pongal Bird Count 2019, please click here.

(Brown-headed Barbet)

Women’s Day 2019 Special: Emerging Women Birders of Salem

Ganeshwar SV

Unlike Chennai or Coimbatore, my district, Salem was not really known for birding. Forget women; there were just handful of male birders six or seven years ago. Back then, I had this crazy thought of seeing more women getting into birding, not just for the sake of birds but this hobby will definitely be a great stress buster for them and can keep our mental health in a balanced state. Regardless of gender, I wish to see everyone getting connected to Nature by some means. We never stopped putting efforts nor did I lose hope. I know that change will happen someday.

It has finally happened and today, the scenario is totally different. It is certainly a dream come true for me. Salem birders are also leading the way; thanks to the immense contributions from women of all ages. Currently, we have more than 80 female birders in Salem (including students). The dedication and love for birds and the number of hours spent on field by our women is absolutely awe inspiring. They have started to participate in surveys, conduct awareness programs, lead bird walks and are always among the top ranked birders in major bird counting events like the Pongal Bird Count and the Great Backyard Bird Count.

VADIVUKKARASI A, 37

Favorite Bird: Green Bee-eater

Favorite location in Salem: Pannavadi, Mettur

Vadivukkarasi A is a school teacher at Pachayat Union Middle School, Krishnampudur, Salem who started birding in 2017. She is nurturing kids to get connected with Nature and has become the driving force for her students and birds everyday with them. She is also monitoring several sites and birds in Salem including the rare White-naped Tit Machlolophus nuchalis along with her husband Senthil Kumar S (headmaster of the same school) and son Subramania Siva S. Green Bee-eater is her favorite bird because as a birder it was the first bird she saw and fell for the bright green plumage, black mask, sharp central tail feather, flying pattern and its activeness even during the hottest part of the day.

DIVYA SUBRAMANI, 23

Favorite Bird: White-throated Kingfisher

Favorite location in Salem: Kannankurichi (Mookaneri) Lake

Divya Subramani started birding in the late 2017 but has got hooked into it with great dedication. She is a district-level resource person at Tamil Nadu Science Forum and has conducted several programs for school children on Simple Science Experiments. Though she is a mechanical engineer by profession she always tries to fulfill her passion/thirst for Nature by birding in all the opportunities in her way. She gets so excited on hearing the call of her favorite bird and strongly believes that seeing a White-throated Kingfisher is a sign of divine omen which makes her day a complete one.

MAHALAKSHMI M, 23

Favorite Bird: Coppersmith Barbet

Favorite location in Salem: Pannavadi, Mettur

Mahalakshmi Murugavel developed a special interest for birds during her undergraduate years in Bangalore. Her birding became more frequent when she joined for her post-graduation in Environmental Science at Periyar University, Salem. A silent person by nature, she has documented over 70 species in the Periyar University campus and with the help of Salem Ornithological Foundation, she has come up with an online pictorial guide to the University’s bird life. She has also encouraged several of her classmates into birding. Coppersmith Barbet is her favorite bird because of the tiny size, colors, chiseling out holes in trees to build nests and of course for its metronomic call.

ANGELINE MANO, 20

Favorite Bird: Black-winged Stilt

Favorite location in Salem: Pannavadi, Mettur

Though she had the interest for birds since a long time, it was just over an year ago, Angeline began her love for birds as a photographer. Quickly, she has learnt a lot and is now a birder-cum-photographer. Within a short time, she has contributed all her media to eBird and birds regularly from her home and college. She is a final year undergraduate student of English Literature at the Government Arts College, Salem-7. Do read more about her journey into birding, here. Black-winged Stilt is her favorite bird because of the white body with black wings, long and pinky legs and the way it walks is eye-catching.

PRADEEPA SUDHAKAR, 38

Favorite Bird: Indian Golden Oriole

Favorite location in Salem: Home (near Old Suramangalam)

Pradeepa Sudhakar is a Physical Education teacher at Panchayat Union Middle School, Krishnampudur who started birding one year ago. She doesn’t get as much opportunities as she likes to go out for birding. Nonetheless, it hasn’t reduced her interest one bit and being a backyard eBirder, she has documented about 50 species from home. Her son Himavat Gouresh is her constant birding companion. Indian Golden Oriole is her favorite bird because of the contrasting colors of yellow gold with black and pinkish bill; it also visits her home.

SUGUNA R, 56

Favorite Bird: Blue-capped Rock Thrush

Favorite location in Salem: Kannankurichi (Mookaneri) Lake

Suguna Ramamoorthy became a birder not solely because of birds but part of the reason could be attributed to her son’s frequent yelling at her for not being a co-birder with him. She is one of the oldest woman birders in Salem not just by age but also by the time (2014) she started birding. Despite her age and health issues, she never fails to participate in major birding events. Her favorite bird keeps changing and it will be one from her most recent birding trip. Currently, it is the Blue-capped Rock Thrush which she saw in the Shevaroys. She is ever enthusiastic to travel to new places for birding.
