About SOF
The Salem Ornithological Foundation (SOF) is a youth-focused, not-for-profit organization registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. Our work is driven by a simple but an important question: How can we ensure to conserve nature in our absence? All answers led us to work at the intersection of science, conservation action, policy and local communities.
Though birds were our primary focus, we have expanded the scope of our activities to other taxa as well. We work in different habitats ranging from wetlands, forests, scrub jungles, farmlands and the hill ranges of the Eastern Ghats.
We also take focused measures to encourage the participation and leadership of women in conservation initiatives. We actively work in liaison with multiple government departments and local communities to lawfully safeguard as many wilderness habitats as possible. All our activities align with the UNSDGs, UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration and other national policies, strategies and action plans.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

OUR APPROACH
Conservation challenges are complex and interconnected. Thus, we adopt an integrated approach by combining science, storytelling, community participation, conservation action, policy support and collaboration.
